两词均可作名词表示“选择”，但在意思与用法上存在着异同。
（1）alternative，可数名词，它只有两个用法，一是表示“可作的选择”或“选择的余地”，也可理解为“选择的可能性”，此时，它可与choice互换使用。如：

bid的用法

1、bid用作名词的基本意思是“企图，努力”，引申可作“喊价，出价，投标”解，常与介词for连用。有时可接动词不定式作定语。

2、bid作“出价，投标”解时，既可用作及物动词，也可用作不及物动词，其后常接介词for，其过去式和过去分词均同于原形bid；作“命令；吩咐”、“说问候话”解时，是及物动词，其过去式可以是bade或bid，过去分词则为bidden或bid，bidden过去经常使用，现在则主要用在故事里。
